Mini splits and side-discharge heat pumps, fitted by the shop that makes the metal.

A father-and-son shop on Summer City Boulevard. Forty-two years of ductwork and custom metal, now pointed at ductless mini splits and compact side-discharge inverter systems — the quiet, efficient way to heat and cool a house on the Bay — installed by the people who still fabricate the fittings.

Ticket 01 · Where the shop is going

Smaller outside. Quieter inside. Mini splits and side-discharge heat pumps.

The second generation is pointing the shop at the two systems that suit Bay-side houses best: ductless mini splits for the rooms and houses that never had ducts, and compact side-discharge inverter heat pumps for the ones that do. Both heat and cool. Both run on variable-speed inverters. Both get installed by people who fabricate the pieces that make the job look like it belongs on the house.

INSIDEOUTSIDE INDOOR HEAD OUTDOOR UNIT · PAD LINE SET

Ductless mini splits

Heat and cool a room, a floor or a whole house — no ductwork
  • Single-zone for an addition, sunroom, garage or bonus room
  • Multi-zone: one outdoor unit, a head in each room, each on its own thermostat
  • Wall, floor and ceiling-cassette heads — or a concealed ducted head where you don't want to see one
  • Inverter compressors that idle instead of cycling: quiet, steady, efficient
Right fit: older houses, cottages and additions where running duct would wreck the plaster
TOP DISCHARGE SIDE DISCHARGE ~40% SMALLERFOOTPRINT

Side-discharge heat pumps

The slim outdoor unit that blows sideways, not up
  • Up to about 40% smaller footprint than a traditional top-discharge unit — fits a narrow side yard, under a deck, along a fence line
  • Variable-speed inverter drive that modulates to the load instead of slamming on and off
  • Quieter fan, and no top grille to catch leaves, snow or a dropped gutter
  • Pairs with your existing air handler and ductwork — or with duct we fabricate
Right fit: a system replacement where the old unit was loud, oversized or in the way
LINE-SET COVER SLEEVE + FLASHING STAINLESS STAND DRIP PAN

Why a sheet-metal shop

The install is only as good as the metal around it
  • Line-set covers, wall sleeves and penetration flashing made to match the house, not the catalog
  • Custom stands, wall brackets and drip pans — stainless or coated for salt air
  • Plenums, transitions and returns for side-discharge systems, fabricated in-house
  • Condensate routed properly, not dripped down the siding
Forty-two years of ductwork is why the new systems go in clean
Sized from the house, not the box. Every quote starts with a load calculation, a look at the panel, and a walk around the outside to pick the spot the unit should actually sit.
Salt air is the enemy. Within reach of the Bay we specify coastal-rated coils and stainless hardware — the same reason our flashing is copper and stainless.
Rebates change every year. Ask what SMECO, BGE or the state are offering on heat pumps when you call; whatever applies gets folded into the quote.

Two Charlies. One brake.

Charles F. Sens Sheet Metal has been a father-and-son shop for as long as there's been a son old enough to hold a seamer. Both hold Maryland HVACR licenses; both answer the phone.

Founder · first generation

Charlie Sens Sr.

MD HVACR Master · reg. 7863

Opened the shop in 1984 and has been laying out patterns on Summer City Boulevard ever since. Master-restricted heating license, reg. 7863 — a number from a much earlier page of the state's book. If a piece can be developed on a bench with a scratch awl and a straightedge, he has made it.

"Measure it twice. Then measure the opening."

Second generation

Charlie Sens Jr.

MD HVACR Journeyman · reg. 58043

Grew up around the shear and the brake and now runs the floor alongside his father — layout, fabrication, installs and the site visits where the measurements actually get taken. He is the one steering the shop toward mini splits and side-discharge inverter systems: the equipment changed, the standard didn't. Licensed journeyman under the shop's master license.

"It fits because we built it to fit."
They don't always agree on how. They have never once disagreed on how well.

Nominal thickness by gauge. Pick the material — steel uses the Manufacturers' Standard Gauge, aluminum uses Brown & Sharpe.

Common duct gauges are highlighted: 26 ga for most residential rectangular duct, 24 and 22 ga as the duct gets bigger or the pressure goes up. Values are nominal; mill tolerance applies.

Rectangular → equivalent round

The round duct with the same friction loss as a rectangular one — the ASHRAE equivalent-diameter formula.

De = 1.30 · (a·b)0.625 / (a+b)0.25. A sanity check, not a design — we'll size the real thing from the load and the static pressure.

Ticket 05 · How it goes

From a sketch on a napkin to a piece that fits

Four steps. The second one is the one most shops skip.

1

Bring it in

A drawing, a photo, a sample or the old part — or the room you can never keep comfortable. Walk in weekdays, call, or email it; dimensions in inches, please.

2

Layout

The piece is developed flat — stretch-outs, seam allowances, bend lines — before anything is cut. Mistakes are cheap on paper.

3

Cut, form, seam

Shear, brake, roll, notch. Pittsburgh or snap-lock seams, spot or rivet, soldered copper when it should be.

4

Fit & install

Pick it up at the counter, or we install it — mini splits and heat pumps included. Installs are permitted and inspected.

Ticket 06 · About

Forty-two years on Summer City Boulevard

Charles F. Sens Sheet Metal, Inc. was incorporated in Maryland in 1984 and has worked out of Chesapeake Beach — the Calvert County bay town at the end of Route 260 — ever since. It is a small shop by design: a master, a journeyman and the brake between them.

The work splits two ways. Contractors and builders bring plans and get ductwork, fittings and custom pieces fabricated to spec; homeowners from the Twin Beaches to Prince Frederick bring a problem — a rusted chimney cap, a furnace that has quit, a duct run that never worked — and get it solved by the people who will build the parts.

Everything is made within a few miles of the Bay, which is why so much of it is stainless and copper: salt air is hard on cheap metal.

The next chapter is already underway. The second generation is pointing the shop at ductless mini splits and compact side-discharge heat pumps — the systems that suit the houses here: older, close together, often without ducts, always within reach of salt air. The fabrication side is what makes those installs look right. The covers, stands, sleeves and flashing come out of the same shop, cut to fit the same house.

Review notes for Zach — remove this block before publishing
  • v4 (2026-10-27) — direction from the son, via Zach: "focus the business on mini splits and ultra side discharge technology." Reflected in: title/meta, hero, trust strip, a new Systems section (Ticket 01), the services card, Jr.'s profile, the About chapter + timeline, the quote-form options and the footer. Everything from v3 is otherwise intact; the previous file is kept beside this one on the VM.
  • LICENCE CHECK BEFORE THIS GOES PUBLIC: the board lists the master licence (reg. 7863) as Master Restricted — Heating. Mini splits and side-discharge heat pumps are refrigerant-circuit systems that also cool, i.e. the air-conditioning / refrigeration areas of HVACR work. Before publishing, confirm the shop holds (or Jr. obtains) the A/C and refrigeration qualifications on a master licence, plus EPA Section 608 certification for refrigerant handling, and a liability certificate on file with the board (it currently shows "not insured"). The page deliberately avoids the words "air conditioning" and claims nothing beyond the two registrations — but advertising these systems invites the question.
  • "Ultra side discharge": read as the compact side-discharge inverter heat-pump class (several manufacturers sell an "Ultra" model in it). The page describes the category and names no brand. Get the dealer list — which brands they install and can register warranties for — and the logos/model names go into the Systems section once confirmed.
  • Figures and claims: "up to about 40% smaller footprint" is a manufacturer figure for side-discharge units (Johnson Controls / Luxaire literature). Rebates: SMECO and BGE heat-pump programs change yearly, so the page says "ask" and quotes no amounts (the federal 25C credit ended for installs after 2025 — do not add it). The three figures are drawn in-house (no licence issues).
  • Verified public record: Charles F. Sens Sheet Metal, Inc. — incorporated in Maryland, established 1984 (Manta; YellowPages shows "42 years"), ~3 employees; 4021 Summer City Blvd #B, Chesapeake Beach MD 20732-4165; hours Mon–Fri 8–5; directory categories: sheet metal fabricators / sheet metal work manufacturers / heating contractors / air-conditioning contractors / hardware store; service area per Claims Pages: Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles, Prince George's, St. Mary's, Talbot.
  • Maryland HVACR board (official, live lookup): CHARLES FARLEY SENS, Chesapeake Beach — MASTER RESTRICTED, qualification Heating, reg. 7863, expires 2027-10-01, board shows "NOT INSURED" (no liability certificate on file). CHARLES F SENS, Chesapeake Beach — JOURNEYMAN, reg. 58043, expires 2027-12-22. The page uses both numbers. Two compliance points for the family: (1) the master license is restricted to heating, so the site deliberately does not advertise air-conditioning or refrigeration installation even though directories list it — confirm before adding A/C; (2) the "not insured" flag is visible to anyone who looks the license up — worth getting the certificate on file with the board.
  • Phones: (301) 855-4380 (Manta, iBegin — the Chesapeake Beach exchange, likely the shop line) is used on the page. Directories also list (443) 964-4205 and (443) 964-5949 — probably cells. Confirm which should be public.
  • Email: none public; the page uses [email protected] — create the mailbox (Cloudflare Email Routing) or give me the real one.
  • Domain: senssheetmetal.com has been registered since 2013-05-23 (registrar DomainPeople; Hostway "siteprotect" nameservers; renewed through 2027-05-23). The www host answers but returns 503 to me. Someone in the family or an old web vendor controls it — find out who before launch. The Wayback Machine was unreachable from here; check web.archive.org for an old site worth salvaging content or photos from.
  • Yelp lists "Sens Sheet Metal, Inc — CLOSED" at Chesapeake Beach. That listing should be claimed and corrected (or merged) so the shop doesn't look closed in search.
  • Unverified, written from your description and softened — confirm or cut: that Sr. founded the shop in 1984; that Jr. "grew up around the shop"; the two quotes on the profile cards (invented placeholders in their voice — replace with real ones); the "walk-in counter" wording (the "hardware store" directory category suggests counter sales, not confirmed); copper/stainless emphasis; seam types listed.
  • Possibly related: the HVACR board also lists Sens master/journeyman licensees on the Eastern Shore (Berlin, Willards, Parsonsburg — "W C Sens Sheet Metal," Parsonsburg). If that's family, it's a story worth a line; if not, ignore.
  • Needed from the family: owner/officer names as they want them printed, Sr.'s original license year, real shop and work photos, a logo if one exists, whether they want the "two Charlies" framing (it's the heart of the page — easy to tone down).
  • Gauge chart and equivalent-round calculator use standard published values (MSG / galvanized / stainless / B&S tables; ASHRAE De formula). Jr. should eyeball them once.
